Musings
Summer is officially here, and June has been the best kind of busy. Things kicked off in Yosemite National Park at the beginning of the month and ended with my niece being born!!! I also squeezed in another quick trip to Chicago–there’s really nothing better than summer in the city. I love finding an event I want to go to and then making a weekend out of it. If you’ve never been to Drunk Shakespeare or Second City, I highly recommend both if you want a night full of outrageousness and laughter. Another highlight was seeing Six on Broadway. It’s sadly leaving Chicago very soon, but I cannot recommend it enough if you ever get the chance to go. It’s a feminist retelling of Henry VIII’s six wives (divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived). It was so funny and had the best vocal performances I have ever seen live!
Reads
I’m obviously heartbroken by SCOTUS overturning Roe v. Wade. Actually, it’s more like rage. I won’t get into it too much here, but it’s on my mind everyday. This article from Vogue with Gloria Steinem and the Duchess of Sussex was a much needed breath of hope in really dark times. I’ve been donating and trying to keep up with how I can help in my state. If I get some solid steps of action, I’ll be sure to share.
Clothing
I was sent a pair of women’s travel pants to review here from a company called Kuhl. It was perfect timing because I was just about to head to Yosemite where I’d be doing a lot of hiking. I was sent the Transcendr Legging which you can see pictured below. If you have any sort of active vacation coming up and are looking for some new gear, I would recommend checking out Kuhl’s website. The leggings were water resistant which I loved. The trail we ended up doing was called the Mist Trail. We were pretty much hiking through waterfalls and rainbows and got a bit wet. The pants kept me dry and also kept me at a good temperature through out the hike (Yosemite is a place where you can be hot one minute and cold the next). I also found the pocket on the side of the leg for my phone super convenient. I need to plan another hike soon so I can wear these again!
Beauty
I hardly ever get my nails done, but I was feeling inspired by summer lol. I decided to treat myself and get something fun. The color in person is like a highlighter, neon green. Obsessed!!
Watch
On the last day of June, I watched “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” on Hulu. It stars Emma Thompson and felt very groundbreaking. It’s explicit but explores themes of sex work and pleasure in a way that felt so realistic and true. It was touching, literally and figuratively. And the performances were incredible. Highly recommend.
In Case You Missed It
I didn’t post any new blogs this month–I was kept too busy with travels and plans with friends & family and couldn’t find any time to write. I have lots of ideas for posts about California (and I still haven’t written about my Michigan trips last summer), so once I get a free day I will get cracking on those 🙂
I did manage to edit and post a new video on my YouTube channel, Walk With Allison. This one takes us around Corfu Town, Greece, a city with so much Venetian influence it looks like it could be Italy! I was here before departing on yacht week with MedSailors.
Thank you so much for watching and extra thanks to my 30 subscribers! hahaha. In all seriousness I appreciate the love– it keeps me motivated to stick with it. I have summer travel plans across the pond in August and would love to film some videos in one of my favorite cities in the world. Any support on my channel would be so great!
Words
“He loved the library, its mahogany shelves that climbed to the ceiling, its bounty of lush pages majestically restrained. He loved it especially on days like this, when it was empty, steeped in quiet, electric with promise, as if the books were breathing, alive as big dogs sleeping at the foot of his bed. He reveled in that particular stillness, in which he felt as if he could, at any minute, turn a page and recognize everything there was in the world to know.”
